Twenty-one

Dear E—,

Happy 21st birthday to my youngest brother. I hope this gift will help you in the continued pursuit of your ambitions.

Despite what you may think, I am very proud of you. I look forward to seeing where you are in five years and when you are there then I hope it is where you wanted to be five years previous.

You have direction. Keep going.

As Bukowski said, ‘Don’t try.’

Happy birthday.

Love, R—
My brother and I were playing in a plot of land next to my aunt’s house in Braintree, ’91. The plot of land served as punctuation between the houses, and it was littered with chunks of ballast.
My aunt ran out of the house around four in the afternoon and she called our names.
‘It’s a boy!’ she told us.
